IMPORTANT WINTER NOTICE: Reports of Burst Pipes - Winterize Your Pipes to Prevent Damage

Hello Neighbors. This is a notification being sent to everyone.

We have received reports from two different homeowners of burst pipes and flooding. The cold weather will freeze water in pipes which can cause them to burst. Frozen or burst pipes can lead to significant issues and costly repairs, so we encourage everyone to follow these steps to safeguard your plumbing system:

Insulate Exposed Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes in your garage, attic, or exterior walls with pipe insulation. This extra layer can help prevent them from freezing.

Seal Leaks: Check for any gaps or cracks in your home's walls or windows. Seal these areas to prevent cold air from entering and causing pipes to freeze.

Disconnect Garden Hoses: Disconnect and drain your garden hoses. Leaving them attached can cause water to freeze in the hose and back up into the pipes inside your home.

Insulate Outdoor Faucets: Cover outdoor faucets with foam insulation or insulated faucet covers to protect them from freezing temperatures.

Keep Interior Doors Open: Allow warm air to circulate freely throughout your home by keeping interior doors open. This helps maintain a consistent temperature and prevents cold spots.

Maintain Thermostat Settings: Keep your home at a consistent temperature, especially during extremely cold nights. Even when you're away, it's advisable not to set the thermostat too low. Deploy small space heaters if necessary in areas that do not receive consistent warm airflow such as first floor bathrooms located at the front of the home.

Let Faucets Drip: Another option for particularly cold nights is to let faucets drip very slowly. This can relieve pressure in the pipes, reducing the risk of freezing.

Taking these precautions will go a long way in preventing frozen or burst pipes and the potential damage associated with it. If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to the Board at Silverwood@silverwoodcondos.org or Tom Gish.

Stay warm and safe this winter!
